Beating the "Sweatshirt Slump": My Fashion Goals for February

While walking from my dorm room to the gym with one of my friends last week, I coined a clever term: the "sweatshirt slump." The "sweatshirt slump" did not come to me unpromptedly. In fact, the term came to me after a series of events—in a F.A.R., you might call it.

F.A.R. Event #1 -  Freezing

During the treacherous five-minute walk between the two locations, my body trembled under the countless layers of clothing I deployed for Massachusetts' negative cold front. (My Arizona self will never quite get used to the New England weather!) There's no more straightforward way to put it; I was freezing.

F.A.R. Event #2 - Articulation

It was in response to my body's feeling of frigidity that I began to articulate my mood.

"It's way too cold outside. I can barely feel my fingertips."

My friend looked at me and the outfit I was wearing and quipped, "Maybe the reason you can't feel your fingertips is because they're buried underneath your ten million layers of sweats."

I responded to her, "Hey, my layers are keeping me warm (somewhat). All I've been able to wear in this cold is sweatpants."   At the culmination of my sentence, I transitioned into the third and final stage of my F.A.R.—realization.

Event #3 - Realization

Although my comment, "All I've been able to wear in this cold weather is sweatpants," could be interpreted as an embellishment of the fact that the cold weather prompted me to wear sweatshirts and sweatpants more often, it possessed a degree of truth. All I had been wearing were sweatpants and sweatshirts. I had fallen victim to the "sweatshirt slump."

Let me explain for those of you who may not know what I am talking about. The "sweatshirt slump" is a developed habit resulting from coping with Winter climates. Those inflicted with the slump swap their everyday clothing for something more weather-welcoming. Before I explain more, it's important to note that there's nothing wrong with wearing sweats. You can be a frequent sweatpant and sweatshirt wearer without falling victim to the "sweatshirt slump." The slump only arises when your change in attire affects your mood. In my case, swapping my everyday jeans and some version of a blouse or cardigan for a good old pair of sweats at school makes me feel less prepared for the day ahead. Instead of feeling like I am off to conquer the day, my comfy outfits make me feel like I am about to conquer my sleep schedule. What I wear truly affects my mood, so drawing on pinterest for inspiration, I compiled a list of three achievable goals for this February to pull me out of my slump.

Goal #1 - Make a Moodboard

In my opinion, achieving your goals is easier when you have a visual of your dreams in fruition. This could look like a vision board, Pinterest board, or any other form of media that adds tangibility to an idea inside of your head.

I love Pinterest boards, so I decided to make one to envision my style over the rest of the freezing month.

My Pinterest board drew on shades of pink and lots of denim to convey a comfortable yet stylish mood. The board included some of the style goals I will discuss next and aesthetic images of feelings that remind me of February. As I create outfits this month, I will use this board as a guide and inspiration to pull me out of my “sweatshirt slump.”

Goal #2 - Staying Warm In Style!

Staying warm doesn’t mean sacrificing style; sweatpants aren’t the only remedy for below-freezing temperatures. Jeans are a great option when dealing with the cold weather. They can be worn with a sweater or cardigan for a stylish look.

Pairing accessories with your outfits adds another dimension to what you are wearing, and throughout this month, I will try to incorporate red and pink-themed jewelry in my daily dress. Additionally, items like scarves can be deployed for accessorization and practicality while the weather is so cold.

Goal #3 - Advice From Mean Girls

Remember that wearing sweatpants isn’t the end of the world. You can dress them up with a few accessories or wear them alone. Even Regina, Karen, and Gretchen from Mean Girls tell Cady she can wear track pants once a week (as long as it’s on Friday)!

The most important part about what you wear is feeling good, so if sweatpants do the trick, then wear sweatpants. And if you need something else to pull you out of your “sweatshirt slump,” try implementing this guide or goals of your own to meet your style needs.
